Heloisa Maia (b. 1960, João Pessoa, Brazil; lives in Miami) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice traverses painting and drawing, to explore themes of memory, identity, and the womanhood. Since 2017 she has been based in Miami, after years of working between Brazil, the US, and Europe.
Her itinerant life deeply informs her work. Transitions, impermanence, and longing surface in her female figures and landscapes, which are at once autobiographical and universal. Working primarily on canvas, linen, and paper, she layers vibrant colors with dynamic lines, creating chromatic narratives that oscillate between imagination and memory. Maia’s constant use of the figure resists realism, instead embodying solitude, curiosity, motherhood, and resilience.
Equally central is her ability to integrate drawing and painting into seamless compositions. Often beginning with painted backgrounds, she incorporates pastels and oil sticks to move fluidly between precise lines and expressive brushstrokes. This dialogue of mediums generates works that capture both structure and spontaneity, mirroring the complexity of lived experience.
Maia’s portraits radiate emotional depth, while her landscapes—whether inspired by the Brazilian Sertao , travels in Morocco or anywhere she might be —become sensory geographies infused with historical and emotional resonance.
