Born in João Pessoa, Brazil, the artist Heloisa Maia, finishes her Communications Studies in 1979, at Federal University of Paraiba and her baccalaureate in Public Relations and Advertising in 1982 in Porto Alegre at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. In the 80’s she lives in California, US and studies painting, drawing and sculpture at San Francisco Art Academy and Palo Alto Art League. Back in Brazil, she takes painting courses with Flavio Tavares and Marlene Almeida at the Tambia Visual Arts Center in Joao Pessoa, where she exhibits in groups shows. In 1995, moves to Porto Alegre, where she participates in painting  workshops at City Hall Art Studio and shows  her work at several design and architecture exhibitions. 

 

In 1998, returns to US, this time to New York, and takes painting and drawing classes with  Phillip Sherrod and A. Palumbo at Art Students League of New York,  etching and engraving with Mohammad Khalil, and painting with Ellen Evjen at Parsons School of Design.  Back  in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 2000, shows her work in special design projects and in the same year participates in a contemporary painting workshop with Sati Zecchi, at Freie Kuntschulle Berlin-Germany. Has solo exhibitions in 2001 at Gamela Gallery, in João Pessoa- Paraiba, at Bolsa de Arte de Porto Alegre Gallery, in Rio Grande do Sul and at the Centre Social et Culturel Franco-Brésilien in Paris, France.  Between 2002 e 2006,  shows her work at The I Drawing Biennial , at Cultural Foundation of Paraiba,  at the group exhibition  4x4 at San Francisco Contemporary Art Center and at  Universities in the north east and center west of Brazil, at Gamela Gallery in Joao Pessoa,  at Bolsa de Arte de Porto Alegre, at the The Drawing of Painting exhibition at Saelpa Cultural Center in João Pessoa, amongst others.

 

In 2007 moves back to New York invited to set up and to be the head of the Brazilian design company Osklen  in US.  Between  2007 and 2010, parallel to her work with the company, keeps showing her drawings and paintings in Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre and in the northeast of Brazil, as well as in New York at Format, HP France Concept store, Crazy Monkey Gallery and East Hapton Guild Hall. She has also several exhibitions in partnership with Florense Brazil. In 2016  participates in an art residency in Vaison La Romaine, Provence, and exhibits there at La Galerie. In the same year  exhibits at Ornare in Miami. In 2018  participates in a group show at Nisi B in Miami and a solo show at Usina Cultural Energisa in João Pessoa, Brazil.

Heloisa lives and works in Miami where she moved in 2017.

Education:

Back in Brazil, takes painting lessons with Marlene Almeida e Flávio Tavares (1994) at Tambiá Visual Arts center in João Pessoa, Paraiba. Centro de Artes Visuais de Tambiá, em João Pessoa, Paraíba. Moves to Porto Alegre (1995) and participates in paintings workshops with Michael Chapman at The City Hall Art Studio. Back in the US in 1998 and 1999, this time in New York, takes etching and engraving classes with Mohammad Khalil, at Parsons School of Design and Painting and Drawing with Phillip Sherrod e Anthony Palumbo at Art Students League of New York.
